Tear Breakup Time Test Screens for Dry Eye Disease

Tear Breakup Time (TBUT) is a test used to check the stability of the tear film on your eyes. This is important because an unstable tear film is a common sign of dry eye disease. In the test, a small amount of fluorescein dye is put on the eye's surface. Then, a doctor watches how long it takes for the tear film to start breaking up between blinks.

Why Results Can Vary

The results of the TBUT test can vary from visit to visit, even for the same person. Dr. Ashraf Ahmad explains that this happens because of factors like how much dye is used, how someone reads the test results, and even the weather. These factors can change how long the tear film stays intact. So, if you have different TBUT results each time, it doesn't automatically mean your dry eye is getting better or worse.

Dr. Ahmad stresses that TBUT is a useful part of any eye exam. It's not just for people who already have an eye condition. If TBUT shows there might be an issue, additional tests are needed before making a diagnosis. These could include symptom assessments and checking for eye inflammation, among other things. These extra steps help doctors understand what's really going on with your eyes.
